Vitiligo is a common condition in which the color pigment is lost in skin, resulting in white patches placed anywhere on the body including the hands, face, chest, or rectum. Even though there are now several widely respected treatments for vitiligo, these should not be considered as a cure. What they do is reduce the appearance of the patches so the patient can live more of a normal life.
The most common vitiligo treatment is the use of steroids creams. These can reduce the intensity of the patches somewhat, particularly if used when vitiligo is just beginning. Application of corticosteroid cream is a treatment that produces results over a long period of time, with at least 90 days of use prior to seeing any results. Monitoring of the skin during this sort of treatment by a determatologist is essential to check for the development of any unusual streaking which can cause a secondary appearance problem.
Another approach is to darken the white patches formed by vitiligo using ultraviolet therapy. After taking certain oral medicines for a period of time the patient is then subjected to a session of exposure to an ultraviolet lamp. It is important to avoid unsupervised sun exposure during the period of undergoing this procedure.
In another well-regarded therapy, psoralen is applied to the affected area, which is then then exposed to UV light until a pink color is seen. The aim is to have the pink area eventually fade and a more normal skin pigmentation appear.
Depigmentation therapy is another approach which tries to diminish the contrast between a vitiligo patch and the surrounding areas. It does so by attempting to reduce the pigment in those surrounding areas.
More drastic vitiligo treatment measures involve surgery, for such procedures as tattooing, skin grafts taken from the patient’s own skin and skin transplants aimed at helping all areas of the skin to achieve matching pigmentation.
Medical vitiligo treatment is not an option everyone chooses. In some cases a person can manage quite well by simply using special cosmetics to mask the pigmentation difference.
